Formatting erases access to data, so the real job is preserving the files first. These five methods cover healthy drives, RAW volumes, missing backups, plus accidental formats.
Back up the drive before formatting it. For a healthy disk, copy every needed file to a separate physical drive. If the disk is RAW, unstable, or missing files, create a byte-to-byte image with Disk Drill first, then scan that image before you format anything.
Formatting does not preserve files by itself. Stop if your only copy is still on the target drive. If formatting already happened, do not write anything new to that device because overwritten data may be impossible to recover.

A byte-to-byte image preserves every readable sector before you format the original drive. This is safer than copying visible folders when the file system is corrupt, files are missing, or the disk disconnects unexpectedly.
If the drive works normally, a direct copy is usually quicker than making a sector image. The catch is easy to miss: hidden folders, application libraries, permissions, or files with errors may not transfer during a casual drag operation.
An existing backup removes the need to duplicate the drive immediately before formatting. Verify its date plus contents first, since a green status icon does not prove that every folder you care about was included.
You can format one volume without erasing a separate volume on the same physical disk. This is a compromise, not a backup, since a partitioning mistake or hardware failure can affect the whole device.
A quick format usually removes file-system records without deliberately overwriting every data sector. Recovery may still be possible, though SSD TRIM, new writes, encryption, or a full format can reduce the chance sharply.
Do not keep testing a drive that clicks, grinds, repeatedly disconnects, reports the wrong capacity, or stops the computer from booting. Formatting will not repair mechanical damage. Repeated scans can also put extra stress on weak hardware.
If the files are irreplaceable, power the device down. A data recovery lab is the safer route, especially for dropped hard drives, liquid exposure, controller failure, or severe read errors.

Create a byte-to-byte backup with Disk Drill when the drive is RAW, unstable, or too important to trust to a basic file copy. For a healthy drive, copying files to separate physical storage is simpler. Existing backups are even quicker once you restore a few test files to verify them.
If the format already happened, stop using the device, then scan it from another disk. Recovery gets less likely each time new data is written.
Verify at least three important files on separate storage before starting the format, then keep that backup until every restored folder has been checked.
